Tryouts Soon For New Mock Trial Team

Arguments are being prepared. And trials will soon begin at Central Methodist University. Mock trials, that is.

Central’s newest competitive academic team is Mock Trial. Under the tutelage of Vera Elwood, students will soon begin simulation a nationally competitive courtroom situation, where students play the roles of both the lawyers and witnesses involved in a fictional court cases, while licensed attorneys serve as judges.

This year, all trials will be held virtually.

Elwood said the exercises will help students develop their professional speaking, argumentation, and problem-solving skills “while adding incredible experience to their resumes.”

She said the team will be co-curricular, which afford the opportunity to earn more course credits.

Informational meetings will be held today at 12:30 p.m. and on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Tryouts, which will require a short 2-3-minute speech based on prompts given at the information sessions, will be from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. All meetings will be held via Zoom with the meeting ID 934 1653 2894.
